THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, ON JUNE 7, 2011, AT 5:00PM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Bob Schlemmer.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gerald Cooley.

 

Superintendent Self and Assistant Superintendent Jimmy Funderburk recognized retirees for this school year. Superintendent Self on behalf of the Board Members presented certificates and thanked the retirees for their dedication and service.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to add an Agenda Item to the Agenda as Item #13 in reference to bids received for Leesville High School renovations.  This was a unanimous vote (2/3 vote required).

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of June 2, 2011.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Self and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to approve the following resignations:

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept the following employee retirements:

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to name central office employees and administrative school staff.

 

Steve Woods reported that the Finance Committee had met and discussed the 2011-2012 Budget.  There was discussion of the reduction of revenue resulting in the reduction of expenditures.  The Finance Committee supports Superintendent Self to make the necessary reductions.  Mr. Woods also reported that the Finance Committee was recommending a twenty-five cent (.25) increase in full pay breakfast and lunch prices due to the increased costs.  On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board approved this increase.  Randi Gleason voted Nay to this motion.

 

Beryl Ford reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and John Farris presented data on test scores.  This information will be discussed at a later date after the scores are calculated.  Mrs. Ford also stated that the Pupil Progression Plan should be available for Board Members in July and that the Plan would be on the Agenda in August for approval. No other action was taken.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to take the bids received for renovation at Leesville High School under advisement and that a decision would be made by July 7, 2011.  This was a unanimous vote.

 

In other business, Superintendent Self asked for volunteers for the Headstart Policy Council.  Superintendent Self also noted that the Student Handbook is on the VPSB Website and that a hard copy of the handbook would be available only upon request.     

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Norma Russell who recently passed away; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Russell was an avid supporter of Vernon Parish School and active in community affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Russell was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

 

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T IO N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of John "Claiborne" Jackson who recently passed away; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was the brother of Bonnie Wise and the brother-in-law of deceased Ronald Bennett, retired bus drivers; and
 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was a life-long resident of Simpson and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
 

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of R. L. "Buddy" Martin who recently passed away; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was a retired bus driver from Simpson; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was a longtime resident of Simpson and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

 

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Betty Perkins Clark who recently passed away; and
 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Clark was the mother of Angela Wisby, cook at Pickering, the mother-in-law of Twila Perkins, cook at North Polk and the grandmother of Dana Wisby, teacher at Pitkin; and
 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Clark was a resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
 

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
