THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. JUNE 2, 2011 AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Chaplain Waters.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Colonel Francis Burns.
BG Chinn addressed the Board.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 10, 2011 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board approved a resolution for the JAG Program. After some discussion, and on motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board adopted the following JAG Resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
RESOLVED, on motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, that the Vernon Parish School Board designated Jackie D. Self, Superintendent to initiate, negotiate, and sign for grants between the Louisiana Department of Education and the Vernon Parish School Board.

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids for bread, milk, and juice. On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Foremost for milk and juice and the low bid from IBC Sales for bread. All specifications must be met.
On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper. On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Unisource for copier paper if all specifications are met.
Bids were received for janitorial/cafeteria supplies on Wednesday, June 1st. Mr. Tim Ward, Finance Director discussed the bids and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to accept the low bids on all janitorial and cafeteria supplies. All specifications must be met.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for propane for Evans, Hicks, and Simpson.
On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for principal at Anacoco High School.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to advertise for principal at Pickering Elementary School.
Mike Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for June and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, June 7, 2011.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to name a principal for Leesville Jr. High School. On recommendation of Superintendent Self, and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to name Angel Williams as Principal of Leesville Jr. High.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to name an assistant principal at Rosepine Elementary. On recommendation of Superintendent Self, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to name Mitzi Martin as Assistant Principal at Rosepine Elementary.
Superintendent Self, on behalf of the entire Vernon Parish School Board, recognized Colonel Burns for his support and dedication. Superintendent Self presented Colonel Burns with a plaque acknowledging his service for the past two years.
In other business, Superintendent Self reminded Board members of the Retiree Reception on Tuesday, June 7th before the 5:00PM Board meeting. Superintendent Self also called a Curriculum Committee meeting for 3:30PM on Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Superintendent Self also stated that Ron DeGray had been hired as the Military Student Transition Consultant. This position is totally funded by the Military Child Education Coalition. Bids for Leesville High School renovations will be opened at 2:00PM on June 7th and will be accepted or rejected at a special called Board meeting on June 9, 2011 at 10:00AM. On recommendation of Superintendent Self, and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for assistant principal at Leesville Jr. High School. Colonel Burns updated Board members on rotations and stated that there would be delays at checkpoints. Freedom Fest is scheduled for July 2, 2011 and the public is invited to attend.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Teresa Munley who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Munley was the daughter of Vickie Harter, teacher at Leesville Jr. High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Munley was a graduate of Leesville High School, a longtime resident of Leesville, and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
