THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. APRIL 7, 2011, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Jackie Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Jerry Penfield.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Steve Woods.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 10, 2011 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the Special Called Meeting on March 25, 2011 and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Sandra Whitlock recognized Vernon Parish Teachers of the Year as follows:

Middle School Jerome Henson Pitkin High School
High School: Ken Hayes Leesville High School
These outstanding teachers were presented plaques and congratulated by the Board for their dedication and hard work.

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Mike Perkins, the Board voted to reschedule the tenure hearing for a bus driver for May 6, 2011 at 10:00AM.
Mike Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for April and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Mr. Perkins also stated that Superintendent Self discussed the professional and support staffing for the 2011-2012 school year.
In other business, Superintendent Self informed the Board members that their official LSBA Transcripts were in their folders. The following Compliant Transcripts for 2010 will be filed with the official minutes: Randi Gleason, Mike Perkins, Randy Martin, Steve Woods, Robert Pynes, Vernon Travis, and Beryl Ford.
Superintendent Self scheduled a Transportation Committee meeting for Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 9:00AM and a Finance Committee meeting for April 21, 2011 at 9:00AM.
Superintendent Self also noted that Board members had the school calendar and the naming list for school employees for 2011-2012. Board members were asked to review this information for approval on Tuesday, April 12th.
Superintendent Self discussed the timeline for the renovation of South Polk Elementary School and noted that Board members would be touring the school today after the meeting.
Mr. Don Gallemore discussed the E-Rate expenditures for the schools and central office.
On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Richard Burns Sr. who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Burns was the brother of John Burns, former Superintendent and District I Board Member, the brother-in-law of Kitty Burns, retired teacher, and the uncle of Randall Burns, custodian at West Leesville Elementary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Burns was a lifelong resident of Leesville, was very active in community affairs, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Eileen McManus who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. McManus was the mother of Carmen Holder, office aide at Pickering Elementary and Sandra Davis, paraprofessional at Pickering High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. McManus was a longtime resident of Pickering and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Howard Paul Cart who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cart was the husband of Mary Ellen Hart, former employee, father of Harry Cart, retired bus driver, and the father-in-law of Barbra Cart, school nurse; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cart was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Danny Welch who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Welch was the father of Nathan Welch, teacher at Leesville High School and the father-in-law of Natalie Welch, teacher at Anacoco Elementary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Welch was a resident of Campti and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Irene Bolton who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bolton was the wife of deceased W.T. Bolton, retired bus driver; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bolton was a longtime resident of the Slagle area and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Curtis Lawrence who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence was the father Debbie Moore, secretary at Pitkin High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence was a longtime resident of Elizabeth, Louisiana and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Kenneth Sasser who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sasser was the father of Todd Sasser, teacher at Pitkin High School, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sasser was a resident of Glenmora and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Bertha "Goody" Goodwin who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Goodwin was the grandmother of Wendy Kreps, Headstart teacher at Hornbeck High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Goodwin was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
