THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. FEBRUARY 3, 2011, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Mel Harris.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mel Harris.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the January 11, 2011 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Ralph Kimball, Taylor and Sons Representative, recognized Lannis Martin, bus driver/paraprofessional, as Employee of The Month. She was presented a plaque and gift card and was congratulated by the Board for her hard work and dedication.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for bids for improvements at South Polk Elementary School.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for bids for Ethernet Switches.
Mike Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for February and would make its recommendations to the Board on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. No other action was taken.
In other business Superintendent Self stated that Pickering Elementary School, Pitkin High School, and West Leesville Elementary School earned the High-Performing, High Poverty Distinction. This is the first year for any Pre-K-12 combination school to make the list and Pitkin was one of four in the State. These schools will be honored at a later date. Superintendent Self also stated that BG K.K. Chinn was planning to attend the March 10th Board meeting.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Eula Mae Midkiff who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Midkiff was the mother of Leanne Jeane, teacher at Evans High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Midkiff was a former teacher at Evans High School, and a longtime resident of Vernon/Beauregard Parishes and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Leonard Sims who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sims was a retired custodian at Leesville High School, and the husband of Billie Sims, retired paraprofessional at East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sims was a longtime resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Howard Hunt who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hunt was a retired bus driver for Vernon Parish Schools; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hunt was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish, a supporter of the community and schools and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Anne Alexandra Perkins who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Anne was the granddaughter of Wendell and Nelda Wellman, retired employees of the Vernon Parish School Board; and
WHEREAS, Anne was the daughter of Kendal and Gerra Wellman Perkins of Natchitoches, Louisiana and she will be greatly missed by her family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
