THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. JANUARY 6, 2011 AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. SUPERINTENDENT SELF CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend John Marzahl.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randi Gleason.
All Board Members were sworn to office by Mr. Willie Deon, Vernon Parish Clerk of Court.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted unanimously to elect Mr. Vernon Travis as President of the Vernon Parish School Board for 2011.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted unanimously to elect Beryl Ford as Vice-President of the Vernon Parish School Board for 2011.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the December 7, 2010 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
A presentation was made by Mr. Glenn Koepp representing Redistricting L.L.C..
Local census data should be available sometime in February 2011. The Board will have two years to complete the redistricting process.
All information will be verified and public meetings will be held during the redistricting process. Interviews will be scheduled with Board members to determine if any changes are made.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to name the Leesville Daily Leader as the official journal of the Vernon Parish School Board for 2011.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to receive bids to sell a 1985 bus at Evans High School. One bid was received from Bob Gibson-Bob’s Cars for $333.33. On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the bid for $333.33 for sale of the bus.
Mike Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for January and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, January 11, 2011.
In other business, Superintendent Self reported on the progress for funding at South Polk Elementary School.
On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Bennie McCune who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. McCune was the mother of Jamie Simonelli, secretary at the Central Office; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. McCune was a resident of Shreveport and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Helen Foshee Jarrell Fontenot who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Fontenot was a retired custodian at Evans High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Fontenot was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Ella Wood who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wood was the mother-in- law of A.L. Scott, former bus driver at Pickering; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wood was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Lawson Bo Brandon who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Lawson was the nephew of Dr. Doug Brandon, District One Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Lawson was a third grader at Platt Elementary School, an avid baseball fan and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of John Edward Cryer who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cryer was a former bus driver for Vernon Parish, the father of Johnny and Joseph ”r;Bo” Cryer, and the father-in-law of Cheri and Susan Cryer; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cryer was a lifelong resident of Leesville, an avid sports fan, and he will be dearly missed by his family and many friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

There being no further business, and on motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
