THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON NOVEMBER 4, 2010 AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Wallace Palmer.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Steve Woods.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the October 12, 2010 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Ms. Vaniesha Riley, bus driver at Evans High School, was recognized as Employee of the Month by Taylor and Sons. Mr. Ralph Kimball presented Ms. Riley with a plaque and gift card for her hard work and dedication.
On recommendation of Superintendent Self, and on motion of Kay Wilbanks, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to name Lee Coriell as Principal for Simpson High School.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to advertise for Assistant Principal at Pickering Elementary School replacing Mrs. Cindy Teasley.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve the updated Inventory Policy.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the new policy on American Recovery and Reinvestment reporting requirements.
Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for November and would make its recommendation to the full Board on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. Mr. Smith also noted that the Committee had requested a review of the Leave Without Pay Policy and Mr. Funderburk and Superintendent Self will give a report at the next Committee meeting.
In other business, Superintendent Self recommended to advertise for assistant principal at Simpson High School. On motion of Kay Wilbanks, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for assistant principal at Simpson High School. Superintendent Self also noted that the Bond Commission had approved the One Million dollar Bond Issue for South Polk Elementary School and a letter of approval would be forthcoming.
Superintendent Self stated that the Board Members had a copy of the State ACT scores and that Vernon Parish was ranked 6th in the State.
Colonel Frances Burns gave a deployment update and also noted that Fort Polk would be hosting Heritage Day on Saturday. This event is open to the public and Colonel Burns invited everyone to attend.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Melvin Wilson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was the father of Wallace Wilson, Principal at Pickering Elementary and father-in-law of Renee Wilson, secretary at the Central Office and Vickie Wilson, retired counselor at Vernon Middle School ; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was the grandfather of Jeremy and Rodney Wilson; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was a lifelong resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods for the entire Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Joy Spencer who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spencer was the mother of Nora Smith, teacher at North Polk, the sister of Gaye McKee, District Seven Board Member, and Patti Cupit, retired Principal at Rosepine Elementary, and the sister-in-law of Bernice Spencer, secretary at Rosepine Elementary; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spencer was a resident of Rosepine and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Ann Churchman who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Churchman was the mother of Bill Churchman, retired teacher from Vernon Parish; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Churchman was a longtime resident of Rosepine and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Kay Wilbanks, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Billie Reid Smith Welch who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Welch was the mother of Tana Thibodeaux, paraprofessional at Hicks High School and the sister of Missy Squyres, Headstart teacher at East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Welch was a resident of LaCamp and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
