THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. FORT POLK, LOUISIANA. SUPERINTENDENT SELF CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON MOTION OF ROBERT PYNES, SECONDED BY MARK SMITH, THE BOARD VOTED TO NAME STEVE WOODS AS CHAIRMAN PRO TEM IN THE ABSENCE OF PRESIDENT MIKE PERKINS AND VICE-PRESIDENT VERNON TRAVIS. ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Chaplain Uwakwe.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Colonel Francis Burns.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 13, 2010 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for bread, milk, and juice.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to advertise for propane for Evans, Hicks, and Simpson.
On motion of Kay Wilbanks, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to advertise for printer cartridges
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to adopt a resolution authorizing the bids for the purchase of Twenty One Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars of General Obligation Bonds, Series 2010 of Leesville School District No. 16 of Vernon Parish, Louisiana
Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for June and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, June 8, 2010.
In other business, Superintendent Self reminded the Board members of the Board meeting at 5:00PM and of the reception for retirees at 4:30PM on Tuesday, June 8th.
Superintendent Self also stated that he and the Curriculum Department would have test data for the schools and district.
On motion of Mark Smith for Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board records with grief and sadness the recent death of Brandon James Thompson, student at Pitkin High School; and
WHEREAS, Brandon was the grandson of the late Clara Thompson, retired cook at Pitkin High School and the nephew of Melissa Sweat, LPN at the central office; and
WHEREAS, Brandon was a resident of Pitkin, a member of the 2011 Class of Pitkin High School, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Albert James “A.J.” Kay who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kay was the father of James Kay, bus driver at Evans; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kay was a longtime resident of Anacoco and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jessie “Ned” Woodham who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Woodham was a former bus driver for Vernon Parish and was the husband of Lucille Woodham, retired cook; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Woodham was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Marjorie Anderson Bailey who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bailey was the mother of Patrick Anderson, teacher at Simpson High, Debbie Smith and Kathy Rolon, teachers at Leesville High; the mother-in-law of Roger Rolon, Principal at Optional School, Tammy Anderson, retired teacher and Michelle Anderson, former teacher; and the grandmother of Dustin Smith, teacher at Hornbeck High; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bailey was a retired teacher and a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Fredda Robinson Duke who recently passed way; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Duke was the mother of Joe Duke, custodian at Pickering Elementary School and the mother-in-law of Linda Duke, custodian at Pickering Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Duke was a cook for fifteen years at West and East Leesville Elementary Schools and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
