THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Tri Evans.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mel Harris.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the January 12, 2010 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Mrs. Raetta Harvey recognized the Vernon Parish Forestry Festival Queens. They were all congratulated by the Board for their achievement.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to name the Board Committees for 2010.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to change the February 9, 2010 Board meeting to February 18, 2010.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to accept the resignation of M. Gene Haymon, District Eight Board Member.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to name Kay Wilbanks to fill the unexpired term of M. Gene Haymon, District Eight Board Member.
Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for February and would make its recommendation to the Board at the Tuesday, February 9, 2010 Board meeting.
In other business, Colonel Burns gave an update on deployments.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Gertraud Montgomery who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Montgomery was the mother of Sonja Funderburk, Title I Director, and the mother-in-law of Jimmy Funderburk, Personnel Director; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Montgomery was a longtime resident of Leesville, a former volunteer for the American Red Cross and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Montgomery will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board records with grief and sadness the recent death of W.W. ”Bill” Parker, former District Two Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Parker was the father of Pam Andis, Technology Supervisor, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Parker was a longtime educator, and over the years he enjoyed great successes in his career as a teacher, principal, and central office supervisor. Mr. Parker also served as District Two Board Member from 1985 until 2002; and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that this Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Lelar ”Mae” Duncan who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Duncan was the mother-in-law of Jerry Clark, maintenance employee for the Vernon Parish School Board; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Duncan was a resident of Alexandria, Louisiana and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of David Cryer Sr. who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cryer was the husband of Luana Cryer, teacher at Rosepine Elementary School and the son of Adel Swain, former bus driver; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cryer was a resident of Rosepine and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Mason Lee McCann who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mason was the son of Rhonda McCann, teacher at North Polk Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mason’s life was short lived but he brought much joy and happiness to his parents and other family members; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of the Board, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of John Malcolm Smart Sr. who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart was the husband of Guinell Smart, retired teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smart was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and a retiree from the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Asa Weathers who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weathers was a lifelong resident of Leesville, served in the Air Force, and was a Master Mason and Shriner; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Weathers was a lifelong resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Gilbert Dowden who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dowden was a 1942 graduate of Leesville High School and a retiree from the U.S. Postal Service; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dowden was a lifelong resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Roger Nickerson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nickerson was the father of Jane Beltz, retired counselor at East Leesville Elementary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nickerson was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Nettie Davis who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis was the mother of Durhl Davis and Patricia Bruce; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to her family at this time of sorrow.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Ruth Spillers who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spillers was the mother of Tommy Bastow and the aunt of Bruce and Glenda Stanley, Martha Yarbrough, and Mandy Wright; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spillers was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Donnis Reichardt who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Reichardt was a 1953 graduate of Leesville High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Reichardt was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to her family at this time of sorrow.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Clarence Dye who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dye was the father of Tim and Bobby Dye, former employees of the Vernon Parish School Board; and
WHEEAS, Mr. Dye was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
