THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. OCTOBER 1, 2009, AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Ricky Reese.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ricky Reese.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the September 8, 2009 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Mr. Tom Neubert discussed policy changes and/or additions.  On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to adopt the following change:

 

DISCIPLINE POLICY

 

A student removed from the classroom shall be assigned school work missed and shall receive 50%  credit for such work if it is completed satisfactorily and timely as determined by the principal or his/her designee, upon the recommendation of the student’s teacher.  Students will be given one day for each day missed to make-up work (example: two days suspension, two days to make up work).

 

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to receive bids to sell central office lobby furniture.  No bids were received and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to allow Superintendent Self and Mr. Ward to dispose of the furniture.

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to receive bids to purchase an activity bus for Pitkin High School.  Three bids were received as follows:

 

Ross Bus Sales                                     $80,750.00

                                                Alternate Used 2009 Bus   $69,889.00

Kent Mitchell Bus Sales            NO BID RECEIVED

Timmons Truck Center                        $78,847.00

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to take these bids under advisement.

 

Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for October and would make its recommendation to the full Board on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.  The Committee also recommended a full-time (1/2 finance/1/2 personnel) position for the central office.  On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to approve this position.

 

In other business, Superintendent Self stated that he would arrange a school visit for Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2009.  Superintendent Self urged the Board members to attend if at all possible.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Bobbie Jo Johnson who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson was the mother of Rhonda Zills, teacher at Rosepine Elementary School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson was a resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Lucas ”r;Trent” Vinson who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Trent was the son of Rhonda and Myron Vinson; and

            WHEREAS, Trent was a graduate of Pickering High School where he excelled in many sports; and

            WHEREAS, Trent is survived by a host of good friends and family and he will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of , seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O LU T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Helen Johns who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Johns was a cook at Vernon Middle School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Johns was a resident of Leesville and she will be sadly missed by her co-workers, friends, and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Herschel Chelette who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Chelette was the father of Kaye Stiles, teacher at Rosepine High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Chelette was a resident of DeRidder and he will be sadly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Stephen Edwards who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards was the father of three students in the Leesville schools; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Edwards was a resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOVLED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Karlis Berzins who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Berzins was the father-in-law of Shonda Berzins, teacher at Pickering Elementary School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Berzins was a longtime resident and businessman of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of James Thomas Hodges who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Hodges was the husband of Mickey Hodges, retired bus driver at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Hodges was a resident of Pitkin and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Gladys Terrell who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Terrell enjoyed working at the church and was very active in the community; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Terrell was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her many friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
