THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON AUGUST 11, 2009 AT 10:00AM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Jeff James.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mike Perkins.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of August 6, 2009.
The Board recognized retired Colonel David G. Sage for his service and dedication to all children in Vernon Parish. The Board presented Colonel Sage with a plaque and thanked him for his service to Vernon Parish and the school system.
Ms. Danielle Edwards gave an update on the 2010 Census.

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve the revised Vernon Parish School Board Goals and Objectives.
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to receive bids to sell a 1986 bus at Hornbeck High School. No bids were received, and on motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to dispose of the bus.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to accept the bid from Ralph’s Electronics for computer and projector cables.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
In other business, Mrs. Beryl Ford reported that the Curriculum Committee had met with the following agenda:
1. Accountability Updates - John Farris
2. Coaching Update - Anne Smith
3. PPP Changes - John Farris
4. Grade Recovery Plan - John Farris
5. Career Diploma - John Farris
6. Optional School - Tom Neubert
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board accepted the changes made to the Pupil Progression Plan. On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board approved changes in the pacing and order of units in ELA in first grade and math in second grade in the comprehensive curriculum. On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to request a waiver for the career diploma pathway option for one year. A Curriculum Committee meeting was scheduled for September 8, 2009 at 4:00PM.
Mr. Mike Perkins scheduled an Athletic Committee meeting for Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 3:30PM.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of James Merritt, Sr. who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Merritt was an avid school and sports supporter; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Merritt was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Lelan Smith who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a resident of the Beauregard/Vernon Parish area and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Freddie Harrison, Sr. who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harrison was a former teacher and was the husband of Emma Harrison, retired teacher from Vernon Parish; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Harrison was a longtime resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THERFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
