THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON JUNE 9, 2009, 5:00PM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Gary Bankson.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gaye McKee.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of June 4, 2009.
Superintendent Self and the Board recognized retired employees. Each retiree was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for his/her years of dedicated service to the school system.
Tom Neubert recognized doctors and staff of Byrd Hospital and thanked them for their support. Mr. Neubert presented plaques to Mr. Roger LeDoux and Mr. Sam Fulton for all the doctors that participated in the athletic physicals. These physicals were all provided at no cost to the parents or to the Board.
Randy Martin, District Four Board Member, introduced Jan Ventidos. Jan was injured in a football game at Pickering High School last year and is still recovering. Jan expressed appreciation from him and his family for all of the support they received from the schools and the community. Jan also thanked his brother and his mother for their support during this long ordeal.

On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to receive bids for an activity bus for Hornbeck High School. One bid was received as follows:
Timmons Trucking Company $76,997.00
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to accept the bid from Timmons Trucking if the bid meets specifications.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to receive bids for janitorial/cafeteria supplies.

On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to accept the low bid received for supplies.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to advertise for printer refills.
On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for LCD projectos and ceiling mounts for projectors.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to name central office employees.
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve a Change Order for Evans Construction project in the amount of $2,000.00.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
In other business Superintendent Self stated that sales tax collections for the year were up 6.7% which is up $650,202.53 from last year. Supplemental checks will be mailed on June 25, 2009.
Superintendent Self discussed contract employees and recommended changes be made to adjust salaries for speech therapists and occupational therapists. These employees will now be full time regular employees and no longer contracted.
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Catherine Slaydon who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Slaydon was the mother of Danny Slaydon and Dot Welch, and was the grandmother of Trina Williams; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Slaydon was a resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Barbara Grappe who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Grappe was the mother of Beverly Rabalais, paraprofessional
at Anacoco Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Grappe was a lifelong resident of Campti and she will be sadly missed by her friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Dale Cooley who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was the son of Carl and Mildred Cooley, retired bus drivers, the brother of Glen Cooley, retired curriculum director, the brother of Marie Ross, retired teacher, and the brother-in-law of Dynette Cooley, teacher at East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was a longtime resident of Slagle and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
