THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Seminarian Trinity Knight.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Beryl Ford.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 7, 2009 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Self and on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to name Ron Roy as assistant principal at Hicks High School replacing Angela Jimenez.

Students from the following schools were recognized and congratulated by the Board for their achievements:  Pitkin High School Evans High School –Leesville Jr. High

 

Presentations were given by the following applicants for curriculum supervisor:

 

Debbie Clark - Sandra Cosio - Kevin Dowdle - Brenda Ramer - Cindy Teasley - Natalie Welch - Joey Whiddon

 

Two curriculum supervisors will be named at the May 12, 2009 Board meeting.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for bids on bread, milk, and juice.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to allow the Finance Director to make adjustments on gas supplements for bus drivers.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to receive bids for a 1984 bus at Hicks.

 

Bids were received as follows:  Luther Thompson - $275.00

                                                    Bob’s Auto Sales - $155.50

 

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to accept the high bid from Luther Thompson for $275.00 for the 1984 bus at Hicks High School.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to receive bids for two deep fryers.  One bid was received as follows:

 

                                    Carl Neugebauer    $40.00  Total ($20.00 each)

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Beryl Ford, this bid was taken under advisement.

 

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to approve a Change Order for Evans in the amount of $5,778.27 for additional fill dirt and drainage culvert.

 

On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve a loan from General Fund to Hornbeck Maintenance Fund and to advertise for bids for an activity bus for Hornbeck High School.

 

Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for May and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, May 12, 2009.  Mr. Smith also reported that the Committee recommended adopting the new pay scale for substitute employees in regard to the minimum wage increase and on motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board adopted the new pay scale for substitute employees.

 

In other business, Superintendent Self stated that we would be advertising for a principal at Pickering High School, Rosepine High School, and for an assistant office manager at the tax office.  Superintendent Self also reminded the Board members of the in-service on Tuesday, May 12th from noon until 4:00 and of the June 4th Board meeting at Fort Polk.  Superintendent Self also expressed concern regarding the off-site dental program and after review, Mr. Self recommended no participation in this program.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Ronald Mitchell who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell was the husband of Lynda Mitchell, secretary at Pickering High School, the father of Kelli LeBato, teacher at Pickering High, and the father-in-law of Marc LeBato and Scott Dowden; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Dowden was a lifelong resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Michael Morris who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Morris was the husband of Vada Morris, teacher at West Leesville Elementary; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Morris was a resident of Toledo Bend and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

           

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Lloyd Lindsey who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lindsey was Superintendent of West Feliciano Parish Schools for fifteen years and was an outstanding educational leader; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lindsey was a resident of St. Francisville and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Mark Davis who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mark was an avid supporter of Vernon Parish Schools and a 1981 graduate of Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mark was a life-long resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Claude Lawrence who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence was active in the community and the Leesville Lions Club; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence was a resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his friends and family; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
