THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR

SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT

FORD CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE

PRESENT:

ABSENT:        None

 

There was also present Dr. Cynthia A. Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Ricky Reese.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randy Martin.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the July 15, 2008 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Sandra Whitlock presented Teachers of The Year for Vernon Parish as follows:

 

Elementary                   Shannon Brister - Hornbeck High School

Middle School             Deborah Guillory - Pickering High School

High School                 Rhonda Hampton - Simpson High School

 

These teachers were congratulated for their accomplishment and the Board thanked them for their dedication and hard work.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to receive bids for reach-in freezers for school cafeterias.  Bids were received as follows:

 

Buckelews                                            $4,400.00 each

LA Food Service Equipment             $4,987.00 each

 

On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by John Burns, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Buckelews in the amount of $4,400.00 for each reach-in freezer.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to adopt the Goals and Objectives for the Vernon Parish School Board.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board voted to name Angela Schraven as assistant principal at Anacoco Elementary School to replace Duane Roberts for one year.

 

On motion of Ricky Reese, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board adopted a resolution ordering and calling a special election to be held in Orange School District No. 145 of Vernon Parish, Louisiana, to authorize the incurring debt and issuance of bonds, making application to the State Bond Commission in connection therewith and providing for other matters in connection therewith.

 

Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for August and would make its recommendation to the Board at the August 12, 2008 meeting.  The Committee also recommended that Jimmy Funderburk be transferred to Personnel Director effective January 5, 2009 replacing Jackie Self and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board approved this lateral transfer.

 

In other business Superintendent Gillespie reminded the Board of the Insurance Committee meeting today at 1:00PM, the Transportation Committee meeting Tuesday, August 12th at 9:00AM, and the Curriculum Committee meeting on September 4th at 8:00AM.  Colonel Sage invited the Board to the Education Forum at Fort Polk on Thursday, August 21st at 6:00PM.

 

 On motion of the entire Vernon Parish School Board, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Dr. Larry Monk who recently passed away; and

 

            WHEREAS, Dr. Monk was a distinguished educator in Vernon Parish for many years; and

 

            WHEREAS, Dr. Monk served the Vernon Parish School System as a teacher, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, in-service and professional personnel; and

 

            WHEREAS, Dr. Monk kept Vernon Parish school personnel up- to-date on all the latest trends and issues in education; and

 

            WHEREAS, Dr. Monk displayed a great sense of humor, compassion, and a sincere love for students and learning; now

 

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

 On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

 R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Reverend Francis "Toy" Belsha who recently passed away; and

 

            WHEREAS, Reverend Belsha was the father of Kathryn Arthur, teacher at Leesville Jr. High; and

 

            WHEREAS, Reverend Belsha was a lifelong resident of the Vernon/Sabine Parish area and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now

 

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
