THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON MAY 3, 2007 AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT REESE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia A. Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mike Perkins.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mark Smith.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by James Armes, the Board voted to approve the minutes of  the April 17, 2007 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Mr. Dale Bayard, BESE Member, addressed the Board concerning High School Re-Design, teacher/labor force, and commended Vernon Parish on a job well done.

 

Tom Neubert recognized the school nurses for Nurse’s Week and thanked them all for their hard work.

 

Curtis Clay recognized students from Anacoco Elementary, Leesville High, Leesville Jr. High, and Pitkin High Schools for their achievement.  The students were presented certificates and congratulated by the Board.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie, and on motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to name school employees for 2007-2008.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to receive bids for paper towels for 2007-2008.  Three bids were received as follows:

 

West Central Wholesale(Leesville)                 $17.50 per case

S & M Food Service(Leesville)                        $17.45 per case

Lake City Supply(Lake Charles)                       $14.98 per case

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Lake City Supply in Lake Charles based on meeting the required specifications.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper for 2007-2008.  Three bids were received as follows:

 

Economical Paper & Janitorial Supplies(New Orleans)  $25.15 per case

Unisource(Shreveport)                                                  $29.95 per case

RICO(Union Town, Ohio)                                             $25.27 per case

 

On motion of James Armes, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Economical Paper & Janitorial Supplies in New Orleans based on meeting the required specifications.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to receive bids for trash bags for 2007-2008.  Four bids were received as follows:

 

West Central Wholesale(Leesville)                       .80ml    $16.75 per case

Lake City Supply(Lake Charles)                             .80ml $11.64 per case

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Lake City Supply in Lake Charles based on meeting the required specifications.

                       

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Beryl Ford, the Board voted to advertise for Food Services 2007-2008 Quotation Calendar.

 

Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for May, 2007 and would make its recommendation to the Board at the Tuesday, May 8, 2007 Board meeting.

 

In other business, Superintendent Gillespie reminded the Board members that her observation form was in their folders and requested they complete it and return it to Mrs. Bennett.  She also presented the summer office hours for the central office and on motion of James Armes, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to accept the summer schedule.  Superintendent Gillespie reminded the Board of her surgery on May 10th.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Forest Blount who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Blount was the husband of Beverly Blount, employee at the Central Office; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Blount was a former counselor at Pickering High School, a longtime resident of Leesville, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Juanita Brown who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown was a paraprofessional at Leesville High School and had also worked in several other schools in District I; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown was the sister of Barney Wilson, Maxine Gunn, Alma Brown, Dorothy Benson, and Commeola Smith, former employees of the Vernon Parish School Board.  She was also the sister-in-law of Zenobia Wilson, receptionist at the Vernon Parish School Board; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Robert ”r;R.C.” Stephens who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Stephens was a retired bus driver from the Vernon Parish School System; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Stephens was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jay King who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. King was the father of Sandra Suydam, cook at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. King was a longtime resident of Pitkin and will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Doshie Perkins who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Perkins was the grandmother of Cassandra Johnson, teacher at Pitkin High School,  and Roxanne Lewis, teacher at South Polk Elementary School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Perkins was a longtime resident of Pitkin and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Mitchell Ross who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Ross was the husband of Dorothy Ross, paraprofessional at East Leesville Elementary School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Ross was a longtime resident of Leesville and will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, on motion by Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
