THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, JANUARY 11, 2005, AT, 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT HAYMON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mark Smith.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Betty Westerchil.

 

 On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of January 6, 2005.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board to approve the attached resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave requests.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the attached request to rescind a sabbatical leave.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve the attached employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

Ron DeGray, Bobby Bordelon, Lori Partridge and Superintendent Gillespie presented Skills Certificates to GATES graduates, Chad Nash and Willard Cooley who have successfully completed the Tech Carpentry program.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the salary scale for the new Maintenance Department assistant supervisor position.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to award the bid of Dave's Diesel Service in the amount of $960.00 for a 14 X 24 used portable building at Rosepine High School and to reject the bid for a 12 X 16 used portable building.

 

Mrs. Westerchil reported a great meeting of the Curriculum/Technology Committee. The Committee discussed honors and gifted offerings and addressed successes and concerns related to the program. Additional meetings for further study will be held.

 

In other business, on recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to appoint David Lewis as acting principal at Simpson High School while Ginger Stuckey, principal, is on approved sabbatical leave.

 

Also in other business, on motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board granted Superintendent Gillespie authorization to attend a superintendents= conference in Florida, which will be held in July. The conference will be funded by the Rapides Foundation.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board Committees for 2005 were approved.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to allow all schools to conduct their own collections for the Tsunami victims.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted.

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Alden Fletcher, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was the father of Mr. Danny Fletcher, teacher at Pitkin High School, the father-in-law of Mrs. Barbara Fletcher, teacher at Rosepine High School, and the grandfather of Ms. Lacey Fletcher, teacher at West Leesville Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was a lifelong resident of Rosepine and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Danny, Barbara and Lacey Fletcher and their family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted.

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board records with sadness the recent death of Mr. Paul Gunn, of San Diego, California; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gunn, a veteran and longtime resident of San Diego, was the brother of Mr. Philip Gunn, board member, and the brother-in-law of Mrs. Maxine Gunn, retired Vernon Parish teacher, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent, along with its heartfelt condolences, to Mr. and Mrs. Gunn and their family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

  

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board the meeting was adjourned.
