THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, JUNE 3, 2004 AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT GUNN CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by James Armes.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mel Harris.

 

 On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of May 11, 2004.

 

Superintendent Gillespie and the Board recognized and presented plaques to Autumn Costa, Regional High School Student-of- the-Year and Mariam Molani, Regional and State Middle School Student-of-the-Year.     

Tom Avant, vocational agriculture teacher at Pitkin High School, along with students, Amy Fee and Heath Carroll, gave a Power Point presentation of their FFA tree-planting project. The group planted a total of 600 hundred trees 10 acres of land along the Louisiana coastline. The reason the project was to provide habitat for migratory birds.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to approve principals for 2004-05.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to name Verna Jones as assistant principal at Pickering Elementary School.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board approved assistant principals for 2004-05.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to name central office employees for 2004-05.

 

Mark Smith reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the list of personnel changes and the changes would be voted on at the Tuesday, June 8th meeting.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Ricky Reese, the Board voted to approve a resolution ordering and calling a special election to be held in Pickering School District No. 142 of the Parish of Vernon, Louisiana, to authorize the incurring of debt and issuance of bonds therein; making application to the State Bond Commission in connection therewith; and providing for other matters in connection therewith.

 

On motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve a resolution ordering and calling a special election to be held in Ward Eight Ward wide School District No. 151 of the Parish of Vernon, Louisiana, to authorize the incurring of debt and issuance of bonds therein; making application to the State Bond Commission in connection therewith; and providing for other matters in connection therewith.

 

Tim Ward addressed the Board regarding salary adjustment checks. The check amounts are as follows:

Teachers, $2,493.34, aides, $1,857.68, secretaries, $1,959.39, janitors, $1,857.68, bus drivers, $2,068.72, cooks, $1,857.68 and retirees, $379.56. Checks will be mailed out on June 11, 2004.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to award the low bid on Rosepine Bond Issue project to Bessett Development, in the amount of  $3,660,800.00.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise bids for milk and juice for the 2004-05 school year.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to advertise bids for bread bids for the 2004-05 school year.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board voted to advertise for copier paper bids.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for bids to sell a used bus at Evans High School.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by, the Board voted to advertise for bids to sell a used bus at Rosepine High School.

 

On motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted:

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs. Eula Mae Robinson, retired cafeteria employee at Hicks High School, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Robinson, a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish, was a loyal and dedicated employee and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Robinson's husband, Mr. L.C. Robinson and his family at this time of sorrow.

On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted:

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board was saddened by the recent death of SFC Robert J. Mogensen, in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, SFC Morgensen was a former student at Leesville High School and he will be remembered for his outstanding service, commitment and contributions to our country and will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent, along with its heartfelt condolences, to SGT Morgensen's family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted:

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to convey its deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Milton E. West and Mrs. Carolyn D. West, of Pitkin, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. West were the parents of Mrs. Karen Thompson, aide at Rosepine Elementary School, and the brother and sister-in-law of Mrs. Linda Simmons, cafeteria employee at Rosepine High School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. West were longtime residents of Pitkin and they will be sadly missed by their family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Board requests copies of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Simmons and their family at this time of sorrow. 

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted:

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their deepest sympathies to the family of Mrs. Peggy Yell, of Longville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Yell was the sister of Mrs. Cindy Shafer, retired cafeteria employee at Rosepine Elementary School, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Shafer and her family at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
