THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, DECEMBER 10, 2002, AT, 5:00 P.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT REESE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Jane Holton.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Betty Westerchil.

 

 On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Ted Paris, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of December 5, 2002.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by C.A. Hughes, the Board to approve the attached resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve the attached request for a leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion B.R. Harvey, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to approve budget amendments in relation to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve new policies for Home Study and Adult Education.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to increase the bus size from 65 to 71 passengers for Paul Marsh and the bus size from 48 to 65 passengers for Kathy Jarrell.

 

On motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board voted to approve the attached 2003 Board Meeting dates.

On motion Murphy O'Banion, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board elected Willis Farris to serve as board president for 2003.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board elected Philip Gunn to the office of vice-president of the Board for 2003.

 

Superintendent Gillespie recognized and presented a plaque of appreciation to Kim Reese, the 2002 board president.

 

Also recognized for their years of service on the Board were: Alvin C. Dowden, Jr., 14 years, Jane Holton, 4 years, C.A. Hughes, 8 years, Ted Paris, 4 years, Kim Reese, 8 years, Linda West, 8 years, W.W. Parker, 8 years, and Murphy O'Banion, 34 years.

 

In other business, Mr. Harvey announced that Mr. Reginald Lambright had been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

President Reese called a special meeting to be held on Thursday, December 12, 2002 for   the purpose of discussing a personnel matter and to receive bids on a used tractor at Pitkin High School.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. Willie Pearl Longoria, of Merryville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Longoria was the mother of Mrs. Angela Longoria, teacher at Rosepine Elementary School, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does hereby adopt this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Roger and Angela Longoria and their family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. Neva Perry, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Perry was the aunt of Mr. Robert Simmonsen, assistant principal, Mrs. Karen Simmonsen, teacher, and Mrs. Deborah Perry, teacher at Rosepine Elementary School and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board hereby adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Simmonsen, Mrs. Perry and their family at this time of bereavement.               


On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. Cora E. Weeks, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Weeks was the mother of Mrs. Jean Wunderlich, retired custodian, the mother of Mrs. Harvey Lowery, custodian, and grandmother of Mrs. Lisa Tucker, teacher, at Rosepine Elementary School, the sister-in-law of Mr. Reid Weeks, retired Rosepine High School teacher, the aunt of Andrea Barkley, teacher at North Polk Elementary School, Sharon Richardson, Rosepine High School cafeteria worker, and Mrs. Lynell Johnson, secretary at the central office; Now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts the memorial resolution and requests that copies be sent to the family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

  

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by  the Board the meeting was adjourned.
