THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, SEPTEMBER 10, 2002, AT, 5:00 P.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT REESE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Gaye McKee.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ted Paris.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of September 5, 2002.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by C.A. Hughes, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to approve the attached request for a leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to approve the attached employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion Willis Farris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

Tony Tillman recognized William Prielipp for his completion of a project that earned him Eagle Scout status. To become an Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must plan, develop and provide leadership for a project to benefit the community. William'  project was a bridge on a walking path between Leesville High School and Leesville Jr. High School. Mr. Tillman requested the Board's permission to place a plaque bearing William Prielipp's name on the side of the bridge.

 

Kem Villejoin and Todd Sasser of the County Agent's office, presented certificates to a number of 4-H students for their outstanding accomplishments in local and State level competition.

 

Dr. Thomas Wilcox, Head Start BHM consultant, addressed the Board concerning Head Start training for Executive Board members. He spoke on the origin, organization and implementation of the Head Start program.

 

On recommendation of the committee formed to address the issues discussed at the Fort Polk Town Hall meeting, and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to move the date a high school senior must be enrolled in the school to receive valedictory and salutatory awards from the first day of school to October 1 or the first school day following October 1 if October 1 falls on the weekend.

 

On motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to advertise for bids for the Leesville High School track project. Bids will advertised September 17th  through October 17th  and will be opened on October 22, 2002.

 

On motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to advertise for bids for the Leesville Jr. High School roofing and air conditioning project. Bids will be advertised September 17th through October 17th and will be opened on October 22, 2002.

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to advertise for bids to purchase a bus for the Special Education Department.

 

On motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to advertise for bids for an activity bus at Simpson High School.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Elmo Davis, Jr. in the recent death of his wife, Mrs. Sharon Davis, of Pitkin; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis was the daughter-in-law of Mr. Elmo Davis, Sr., former Vernon Parish School Board member. She was a longtime resident of the Pitkin community and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Davis, along with its deepest sympathies to the entire family, at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the following memorial resolution was adopted.

 

RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express its sincere condolences to the family of Mrs. Catherine Sexson, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Sexson was the mother of Mr. William "Bill" Sexson, former teacher Vernon Parish teacher and the mother-in-law of Mrs. LaWanda Sexon, teacher at Leesville High School. She was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Sexson and their family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this

means to express their sincere sympathies to the family of Mr. Bertie Cryer, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Cryer, a retired cafeteria employee at Rosepine Elementary School, was a loyal and dedicated employee and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

 BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Cryer's family at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
