THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, JUNE 6, 2002, AT 10:00., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT REESE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Betty Westerchil.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Philip Gunn.
On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of May 7, 2002.
On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Jane Holton, seconded by Ted Paris, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Linda West, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employees who were not named in April but are now eligible to be named.
Tom Neubert recognized High School, Jr. High School, and Elementary School Support Personnel-of-the-Year as follows: Joyce Bailey, custodian at Rosepine High School, Robert Salter, custodian at Rosepine Jr. High School, and Vivian Wilson, paraprofessional at North Polk Elementary School.
Brenda Bealer, Director of Head Start, recognized top Head Start volunteers, Policy Council officers, teacher and aide with the most volunteer hours, and teacher and aide with the greatest percentage increase over the previous year. Each honoree received a plaque and a Superintendent's Certificate of Appreciation.
Judy Weisgerber, on behalf of the Vernon Parish High School Rodeo Club, recognized Katie McCarthy, student at Simpson High School, for qualifying for State Finals competition in three events.
On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve a resolution for continuing the consolidated application for program funding for Titles I, II, III, IV and V for 2002-03.
A move made by B.R. Harvey was seconded by the Board to adopt the following resolution requesting the legislature to fund the school board's part of the increase in State Group Benefits Program.

Jackie Self presented the 2002-03 Personnel Evaluation Plan for Board approval and on motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the plan as presented.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to award the low bid for copier paper to Unisource in the amount of $18.35 per case.
On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to award the low bid that met specifications on a school board vehicle, to Leesville Motors in the amount of $21,159.00 after trade.
On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to award the low bid that met specifications, on a bus for Head Start to Timmons Bus Sales, of Alexandria, in the amount of $49,653.60.
On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to advertise for bids on bread for the parish schools for the 2002-03 school year.
On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to advertise for bids on milk for the parish schools for the 2002-03 school year.
On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to advertise for bids on light fixtures for Pickering High School baseball and softball fields.
Gene Haymon reported that the Technology Committee had met for the purpose of discussing the District's Technology Plan and the Committee's recommendation that the plan be approved by the Board.
On recommendation of the Technology Committee and on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve the plan as presented.
Ted Paris reported that Mr. Ray Fugatt, architect for the Ward I Schools' renovations and repairs, had met with the District 1/6 Committee and will bring back plans for the project including timelines, in July. Mr. Paris also reported that Roger Rolon, principal at Leesville Jr. High School, was at the meeting and discussed the middle school concept which will be in place at the school this fall.
Superintendent Gillespie gave a report on summer school which began Wednesday, June 5th with an enrollment of 333 students. The school received an excellent rating last year and Superintendent Gillespie expects the rating to be repeated this summer.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to advertise for an assistant principal at Vernon Middle School. Superintendent Gillespie and Sammie May, principal, will conduct interviews with all applicants and the position will be filled at the July 11th Board meeting.
