THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, MAY 2, 2002, AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT REESE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Dr. Cynthia Gillespie, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mark Smith.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jane Holton.

 

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of April 16, 2002.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Murphy O’Banion, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave requests.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Jane Holton, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board voted to approve the attached request for a leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On recommendation of Superintendent Gillespie and on motion of Murphy O’Banion, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employees not named in April.

On motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by Murphy O’Banion, the Board voted to approve the LEA application for Special Education federal funds.

 

Curtis Clay recognized approximately 125 students from the following schools: West Leesville Elementary School, Leesville High School, Leesville Jr. High School, Evans High School, Hornbeck High School, Pickering Elementary School, Pickering High School and Rosepine High School. Each honored student received a Superintendent’s Certificate for his or her outstanding achievement.

 

On motion of Linda West, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve a budget amendment as presented by Bill Endris, Director of Finance.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to advertise for Food Services Price Quotation Calendar.

 

Ted Paris reported that the District 1/6 Committee had discussed the upcoming bond election and the issue of providing financial support for sponsors going with students to National conventions.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to Mr. D.L. Ritchie who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Ritchie was the father of Mrs. Sharon Hahler, the father-in-law of Mr. Gary Hahler, teachers at Pitkin High School, and the uncle of Mrs. Selena Friday, also a teacher at Pitkin High School. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School wish to express their heartfelt condolences to Mr. Roland Mitcham, former board member, in the recent death of his wife, Mrs. Nona Rae Mitcham, of Evans; and

                WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitcham was a lifelong resident of our state, a very active member of her community and church and a great supporter of this school system. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Mitcham and his daughters at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Zenobia Wilson, receptionist at the central office, in the recent death of her sister, Mrs. Zenolia McCarty; and

                WHEREAS, Mrs. McCarty was a native of Leesville and after several years of traveling with her husband who served in the military, she returned to Leesville. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Wilson and her family at this time of sorrow.                             

 

On motion of W.W. Parker and Kim Reese, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board were saddened by the untimely death of Mrs. Tammy Moore, cafeteria employee at Hornbeck School; and

                WHEREAS, Mrs. Moore’s sons, Stevie, a seventh grader, and Timmy, a fifth grader, attend Hornbeck School; and

                WHEREAS, Mrs. Moore was a loyal and dedicated employee and she will be sadly missed by her family, her many lifelong friends, former classmates and the administration and staff at Hornbeck High School; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent, along with its heartfelt condolences, to Mrs. Moore’s husband, Mr. Mike Moore, her sons, Stevie and Timmy, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dowden and the entire family, at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere condolences to the family of  Rev. Vessie Prewitt, who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Rev. Prewitt was the father of Mr. James Prewitt, retired school administrator, and the father-in-law of Mrs. Ursula Prewitt, retired payroll clerk at the central office; and

                WHEREAS, Rev. Prewitt was a well-known and highly respected minister and pastor in our area and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. and Mrs. James Prewitt and their family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere condolences to Mrs. Rhonda Perry, retired teacher at Rosepine High School, in the recent death of her father, Mr. Harold Goins, of DeRidder; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Goins was the cousin of Mr. Rufus Goins, retired principal at Rosepine Elementary School, Mr. Charles Lewis, principal at Rosepine High School and Mr. Don Goins, former school board member; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Goins was a well-known businessman in DeRidder and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial be sent to Mrs. Perry and her family at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
