THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, DECEMBER 6, 2001, AT 10:00 A.M.., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT HARVEY CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Willis Farris.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by W.W. Parker.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of November 13, 2001.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by C.A. Hughes, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Murphy O’Banion, the Board voted to approve that attached the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

Curtis Clay recognized the Leesville Jr. High School 7th grade football team and coaches for an undefeated 2001 season. each member of the team was presented a certificate and a plaque commending the outstanding accomplishment was presented to Gary Anders, head coach and Gerald Mitchell, assistant coach.

 

Evans teachers, Kathy Bass, Tonya Jeane, and Ulita Watson, gave a presentation on a program at Evans School which is being funded by a Rapides Foundation grant. The concept  which incorporates the accelerated reading and the across the curriculum programs is being taught at their school’s elementary and middle school levels.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Murphy O’Banion, the Board voted to advertise for bids on an activity bus at Evans High School. Bids will be received on January 10, 2002.

 

On motion of Murphy O’Banion, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to advertise for an elementary and a secondary curriculum administrator. The two administrators will split the duties of the position left vacant by Dr. Cindy’s Gillespie’s appointment to superintendent, along with additional duties, and will not be of any additional salary cost to the Board.

 

Kim Reese reported that the District 1/6 Committee had made a decision to pursue a bond issue for the district and will have more information to report at a later date.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Lloyd Weeks, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Weeks was the brother of Mr. Reid Weeks, retired teacher at Rosepine High School and the uncle of Mrs. Lynell Johnson, secretary at the central office and Mrs. Sharon Richardson, cafeteria employee at Rosepine High School; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Weeks was a longtime resident of Rosepine and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. James L. Spencer, of Rosepine, who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Spencer was the husband of Mrs. Joy Spencer, retired teacher at Rosepine Elementary School, the father of Mrs. Nora Smith, former teacher at Rosepine Elementary School, the brother-in-law of Mrs. Gaye McKee, board member, Mrs. Patty Cupit, principal at Rosepine Elementary School and Mrs. Bernice Spencer, aide at Rosepine Elementary School; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Spencer was also the father of Mr. Nathan Spencer, Forest Management Administrator for Temple-Inland Forest Products, a company that has made many monetary contributions to Vernon Parish students through its Scholastic Awards Program; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Spencer’s family at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
