THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, JUNE 12, 2001, AT, 5:00 P.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT HARVEY CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Willis Farris.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Murphy O'Banion.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of June 7, 2001.

Leslie Koenck recognized the 2000-01 Mathematics Site Leader participants. The DEEP Site Leader teachers were honored for their work on the math curriculum grades K-8 during the past school year. The site leaders worked with the teachers at their school in implementing the new curriculum and DEEP philosophy of teaching. Those honored were: Angie Griffis, Anacoco Elementary, Kathy Wilson, Anacoco High, Debra Partridge, East Leesville Elementary, Tanya Jeane, Evans, Rhonda Roberts, Hicks, Tina Pilcher, Hornbeck, Pearl Menard, Pickering Elementary, Richard Partridge, Pickering High, Deborah Guillory, Pickering Elementary, Brenda Paddy, North Polk, Elizabeth Maricle, South Polk, Sadia Cryer, Rosepine Elementary, Alison Morgan, Simpson, Michelle Partridge, West Leesville Elementary, Rebecca Robins, Vernon Middle, Robin Fritts, Vernon Middle, Patricia Harvey, Leesville Jr. High, Tammy Lambright, Pitkin, LeeAnne Sneed, West Leesville Elementary. 

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

A motion was made by Ted Paris and seconded by Philip Gunn to move the  transfer of Charles Balthrop from Leesville Jr. High School to South Polk Elementary School, from the block of transfers for a separate roll call vote.  The results of the vote are as follows:

By vote of 12 to 3, the motion failed.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to name central office employees for 2001-02.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Linda West, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to add Roger Rolon to the attached list of school administrators for 2000-01 and approve the list.

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to approve a resolution for continuing the consolidated application for program funding for Titles I, II, IV, and for VI class size reduction.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the Personnel Evaluation Plan for 2001-02.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to receive bids on a portable office building for the Special Education Department. The following bids were received:

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to take the bids under advisement.

On motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to take the bids for copier paper under advisement.

 

On motion of Murphy O=Banion, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to receive bids on paper towels. The following bids were received:

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to accept the low bid that meets specifications.

 

On motion of Jane Holton, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to advertise for bids for milk for the 2001-02 school year.

 

On motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by Ted Paris, the Board voted to advertise for bread for the 2001-02 school year.

 

Betty Westerchil reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and among the topics discussed were LEAP scores, the consolidated budget, and the 2001-02 Pupil Progression Plan.

 

Dr. Cindy Gillespie discussed the spring 2001 Leap scores and reported that Vernon Parish's scores continue to improve and remain considerably above the state average.

 

Dr. Gillespie also discussed changes in the 2001-02 Pupil Progression Plan. The plan will be available for community review in the central office and Board approval will be requested in July.

On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board is pleased that the test scores of our students continue to improve and that our parish's scores remain considerably above the state average; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Cindy Gillespie and the central office supervisory staff dedicate many hours to developing an instructional program that is aligned with our required tests, and to supplying materials and resources to assist teachers with meeting the needs of individual students and to training personnel in testing procedures; and

WHEREAS, our teachers incorporate the information and materials made available to them into their lesson plans and utilize every opportunity afforded them to prepare their students for testing; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this resolution to commend the teamwork of the administration, teachers, support personnel, parents and students in accomplishing these results.

   

In other business, a meeting of the Finance Committee and the Salary Committee was scheduled for Wednesday, June 20th at 9:00 a.m.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its sincere sympathies to the family of Mrs. Hannah "Cookie" Lavon Broussard, of DeRidder, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Broussard was a native of Vernon Parish and the aunt of Mrs. Verna Jones, counselor at Leesville Jr. High School; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Jones and her entire family at this time of bereavement.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
