THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, MAY 3, 2001, AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT HARVEY CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Betty Westerchil.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Philip Gunn.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of April 10, 2001.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to approve the attached employee termination.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave requests.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Jane Holton, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached request for a leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employees who were not named in April.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

Curtis Clay recognized students from Leesville High School, Evans High School, Hornbeck High School and Pickering Elementary School for their outstanding accomplishments. The students were introduced individually and each was presented with a certificate of achievement.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve The Louisiana Compliance Questionnaire which is used for auditing purposes.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to open bids on some used bleachers at Hornbeck High School. One bid was received.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by A.C. Dowden, the Board voted to award the bid, in the amount of $33.33, for the used bleachers at Hornbeck High School to John Lewing.   

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to advertise for the Food Services 2001-2002 Price Quotation Calendar.

 

On motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to advertise for bids to purchase paper towels for the parish schools.

 

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Jane Holton, the Board voted to advertise for bids to purchase copier paper.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Willis Farris the Board voted to advertise for bids for the construction of a portable office building at the Special Education Department.

In a report from the District 1/6 Committee meeting, Ted Paris informed the Board that the time for 1/6 Committee meetings on the first Thursday each month, has been changed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

 

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to add black as an additional school color for uniform tops at Leesville Jr. High School.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to allow the superintendent the option to approve a four-day work week during June and July for central office employees.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Lee Roy Monk, of Hicks, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Monk was the father-in-law of Mrs. Glenda Monk, custodian at Hicks High School, and the grandfather of Mrs. Letitia Newnham, teacher's aide at Hicks High School; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Glenda Monk and Mrs. Letitia Newnham, along with its deepest sympathies to the entire family, at this time of sorrow.

 

On Motion of Philip Gunn, on behalf of B.R. Harvey, and seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its heartfelt sympathies to the family of Mr. E.W. "Bill" Miller, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Miller was the husband of Mrs. Ora Lea Miller, teacher at Pitkin School, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Miller and her family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their deepest sympathies to Mrs. Marjorie Hayward in the recent death of her husband, Mr. Gerald "Jerry" Hayward; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hayward was a longtime resident of this area and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Hayward, along with its sincere condolences to the entire family, at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Robert "Bob" Miller, of Evans, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Miller was the husband of Mrs. Betty Miller, retired aide at Evans High School. He was a lifetime resident of the Evans community and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Miller and her family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere condolences to Mr. Thomas "Buck" Goins, retired custodian at Anacoco Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Goins was a longtime resident of Anacoco and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Goins, along with its deepest sympathies to the entire family, at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
