THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, OCTOBER 5, AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT WEST CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Kim Reese.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gene Haymon.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of September 12, 2000.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve the attached employee termination.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Ted Paris, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Murphy O=Banion, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

Jackie Self introduced Major Fran Chancey, teacher at Pickering High School and a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, who presented a certificate of appreciation from the Department of Defense to Mr. Roger Rolon, principal at Pickering High School.

 

Mrs. Laura Clark, coordinator of the Rapides Foundation Grants in Schools, presented a plaque to the Board which listed the Vernon Parish Schools that have participated in the Rapides Foundation Grant Program.

 

Renita Davis, Tammy Phillips, and Penny Williams, teachers at Leesville High School, gave a presentation on the academies at Leesville High  School that  Rapides Foundation grants are being used to fund.

 

On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following resolution of appreciation to the Rapides Foundation Grant Program:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its appreciation to the Rapides Foundation Grant Program for its insight and concern for the continuing success of our school system and for providing additional educational opportunities for our students; and

WHEREAS, the area of staff development is a critical need in all Louisiana School Systems; and

WHEREAS, the Rapides Foundation provides substantial funding in the area of staff development based on school needs;     

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that this Board commends the Rapides Foundation for continued support of the Vernon Parish School System.                    

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by Murphy O=Banion, the Board voted to advertise for bids to sell the Cain property located at Pitkin High School.

 

On motion of Murphy O=Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board approved naming the Rosepine High School Football stadium and field in honor of Mr. Benard McKee.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Ottis Bernell Hagan, of Hicks, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hagan was the father of Mrs. Paula Bennett, custodian at South Polk Elementary School and Mr. Donald Hagan, former employee at the Vernon Parish School Maintenance Department;

WHEREAS, Mr. Hagan was a native and lifelong resident of the Hicks area and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Hagan=s family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Murphy O=Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish toexpress their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs. Mary Blackwell, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Blackwell was the mother-in-law of Mrs. Irma Ruth Blackwell, bus driver at Pickering High School. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board records with grief and sorrow the untimely death of Miss Charley Lynn Cupit, of Rosepine; and

WHEREAS, Charley was the daughter of Mrs. Patty Lynn Cupit, principal at Rosepine Elementary School, and Mr. Charles David Cupit, former Vernon Parish teacher, and the niece of Mrs. Gaye McKee, District VII School Board member; and

WHEREAS, Charley was a lifelong resident of Rosepine and a 1996 graduate of Rosepine High School and she will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and her many friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Patty Cupit, Mr. David Cupit and the entire family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathies to the family of Mrs. Wanna B. Lee, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lee was the aunt of Mr. Jerry Howard, custodian at Leesville High School, and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mr. Howard and his family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of W.W. Parker, on behalf of Kim Reese, seconded by the Board, the Board

adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathies to the family of Mr. Lynn Edward Evans, of Hornbeck, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Evans was the husband of Mrs. Barbara Evans, retired bus operator at Hornbeck High School, the father of Mrs. Jenny Browning, teacher at Hornbeck Elementary School, and the brother of Mr. Ben Evans, former District II School Board member, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that copies be sent to Mrs. Barbara Evans, Mrs. Jenny Browning, Mr. Ben Evans, and the entire family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board were saddened by the recent death of Mrs. Vernis Simms, retired Vernon Parish teacher; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Simms was a loyal and dedicated educator and a credit to the educational community. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Simm=s son, Mr. Jackie Simms, and his family along with sincere condolences from this Board.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
