THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, AUGUST 8, 2000, AT, 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT WEST CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Ted Paris.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by C.A. Hughes.

 

 On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of August 3, 2000.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Ted Paris, seconded by C.A. Hughes, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the attached request for leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

Mr. Ralph Clause, manager of Wal-Mart Super Center of Leesville, presented the Wal-Mart Teacher-of-the-Year Award to Mrs. Fay Martin, teacher at Pickering Elementary School. Along with the award, Mrs. Martin was presented a $500.00 grant to be used for the school.

 

Dr. Glen Cooley gave an enlightening slide presentation on his visits to the Ukraine and discussed some of the differences in economic and educational opportunities in their country and ours.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to open bids on a portable building at Pickering Elementary School. Only one bid was received as follows:

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to take the bid for a portable building at Pickering Elementary School under advisement.

 

In other business, on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gene Haymon, the Board voted to advertise for bids for a lease/purchase for an activity bus at Leesville High School. Bids will be received on September 12, 2000, at 5:00 p.m.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to employ a part-time employee at the meat processing plant at Evans School.

 

On motion of A.C. Dowden, Jr., seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Chauncey Wilson, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was the father of Mr. Ervin Wilson, bus operator at West Leesville Elementary School, the sister-in-law of Mrs. Vivian Wilson, aide at North Polk Elementary School, and the uncle of Ms. Cassandra Wilson, principal at North Polk Elementary School, Ms. Castine Porche, teacher at Vernon Middle School, and Ms. Stephanie Wilson, coordinator at the Vernon Parish Head Start office;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby adopt this memorial resolution and requests that copies be sent to the members of Mr. Wilson's family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathies to the family of Rev. Ray Penfield, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Penfield was an active and well-respected member of our community and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Rev. Penfield's family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Jane Holton, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to convey its heartfelt sympathies to the family of Mr. William H. Jaeger, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jaeger was the father of Mrs. Jan Scoles, teacher at West Leesville Preschool Center, and the father-in-law of Mrs. Wannelle Jaeger, teacher at Pickering Elementary School;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to the family at this time of sorrow.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by  the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
