THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, AUGUST 3, 2000, AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT WEST CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Gaye McKee.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ted Paris.

 

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of July 20, 2000.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of A.C. Dowden, Jr., seconded by C.A. Hughes, the Board voted to approve the attached list of resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gaye McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve the attached request for leave without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of A.C. Dowden, Jr.,  seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve the attached list of retirees returning to work for the 2000-01 school year.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Gaye McKee, seconded by, the Board voted to name Robert Simmonsen as assistant principal at Rosepine Elementary School.

 

Tim Ward, Susan Gautreaux, and Don Gallemore gave an update on the Principal's Administrative Management Systems, PAMS, computer software program which is being installed all Vernon Parish Schools. The program will be used for student and teacher information as well as for school accounting. The central office accounting department will have access to the  accounting information of all the parish schools. Extensive training has been provided for all school personnel who are responsible for accounting and reporting. In addition, Mr. Gallemore gave a general update on technology.

 

Betty Westerchil gave a report from the LSBA Legislative Update.  Mrs. Westerchil, Mark Smith and Tim Ward attended.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to advertise for bids to purchase an activity bus at Hicks High School.

 

In other business, Superintendent Schwartz announced a called meeting of the District 1/6 Committee scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at 9:00 a.m.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board were deeply saddened by the recent untimely death of Benjamin Smith, a 1999 graduate of Hicks High School; and

WHEREAS, Benjamin was the grandson of Mrs. Margaret LaCaze, retired teacher's aide at Hicks School, and the nephew of Mrs. Donnis Poe, teacher at Leesville High School and Mr. Paul Poe, principal at Vernon Parish Optional School and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution, along with its heartfelt sympathies, be sent to Benjamin's family at this time of sorrow.
